RIO DE JANEIRO – With the rising overweight population becoming more and more noticeable all around the world, Brazilian bikini manufacturers and their marketing teams are making Brazilian bikinis more popular in the eyes of beach-goers and avid swimmers. This has most recently been see on the beaches of Brazil where women who once wore skimpy bikinis are now showing off the pounds they have put on. Bikini producers and distributors have reinvented the Brazilian bikini look by twisting the product to looking more attractive on overweight females.
It seems as though plus-size swimwear, especially in Brazil, is going to become a necessity, not just a fad.
What’s so odd about this occurrence is that this new bikini trend is taking place in one of the most body-conscious nations in the world. Brazil has always been known for their beautiful women and gorgeous beaches in the sun, but who would have thought that plus-size bikinis would have hit this nation so soon? These women no longer need to wear a cover shirt over their bikinis to hide what they have; their new, expanded Brazilian bikinis make them sexy even if they don’t have an hour glass figure.
After interviewing many Brazilian nationals and some Brazilian bikini manufacturers, it’s clear that plus-size clothing in general is very hard to find in Brazil. Women and men from this country have always been having a tough time finding retailers who carried apparel in their correct size and often had to settle for tight, uncomfortable, unfitting clothing. Now that the Brazilian bikini market has taken a turn to accept these overweight beach junkies, the rest of Brazil’s fashion market is riding the trend too.
The theory behind these new bikinis and how they work is that they aim to keep the user as admirable as possible by thickening the straps of the bikini only slightly and focusing on “tucking in” the fat rather than having it spill out over strings of the previous Brazilian bikinis.
The micro bikini market may soon have to become the macro bikini market.
History tells us that the reason Brazil has always been so image oriented is because the country has a history of being a rather poor nation with a very underfed population. Therefore, previously, the land’s people have always needed skimpy clothing products, especially bikinis. Now that the country is economically booming with outsourced jobs from the United States and other nations, the people have taken to making more money at the price of gaining some weight.
Brazilians are also known to take health-advice lightly and prefer to eat rice and beans over a salad (which is not part of their culture). This type of snacking has contributed to the country’s demand for larger clothing and plus-size swimwear.
